Dill Castle

The origins of Dill Castle likely date back to the 11th century, built upon the foundations of older Roman or Celtic structures. As a regional castle, it probably served Albert von Dill, Count of Mörsberg. A contract from 1130 between Meginhard von Sponheim, Mechthild von Mörsberg, and Archbishop Adalbert I of Mainz-Saarbrücken confirms that ownership of Dill Castle was linked to the protective vogtship over the Augustinian canons' monastery of Pfaffen-Schwabenheim. During the Palatinate War of Succession in 1697, the castle was destroyed by French troops under General Melac, though the village itself was spared. Restoration work on the ruin was carried out between 1966 and 1967, and again in 1970.

The Dill castle ruin is located in the municipality of Kirchberg-Dill in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 375 m above sea level.
