Dobra Castle

Dobra was probably built around the middle of the 12th century. In 1186, the fortified building was first mentioned in a document with Hertnit von Dobra.

In 1341, the Kuenringer of Weitra-Seefeld bought half of the castle. In 1405, Dobra came into the possession of the Lords of Liechtenstein as a dowry. In 1446, it was owned by the notorious Tobias von Rohr, who engaged in the lucrative business of robber knighthood. He was forced to surrender two years later by an army of the provincial estates. Wilhelm von Missingdorf was the lord of the castle from 1464. With Hans von Missingdorf, his family also died out in 1513. In the 16th century, the previously predominantly Gothic complex was converted into a heavily fortified Renaissance residential castle. In 1533, Nikolaus von Rauber was enfeoffed with Dobra.

Ulrich Graf von Hardegg owned the lordship from 1559, but sold it in 1593 to Erasmus Braun von Pielachhag. Among the rapidly changing owners of the 17th century were the Kuefstein, Walderode, and Megier. In 1645, the castle's garrison successfully repelled a siege by the Swedes. As Dobra had become too uncomfortable as a residence, Ignaz Philipp Freiherr von Ehrmanns, who had been lord of the castle since 1715, had the Meierhof expanded into a castle-like building. In 1725, he then moved there and left Dobra to decay. The surrounding farmers were allowed to dismantle the masonry and use it as building material. In 1906, parts of the outer walls collapsed.

Since 1958, the Windhag'sche Stipendienstiftung has owned the ruin. Its renovation and maintenance have been taken over by the "Pölla Aktiv" association, which has leased the complex.
