The Dürnstein Castle Ruin in Styria was a border fortress between Styria and Carinthia.

History+

Dürnstein Castle was first documented in 1144 as "castrum Dierenstein." It served as the ancestral seat of the Dürnsteiner family, which, however, died out by 1192. Subsequently, the castle came into the possession of the Wildoners, whose branch residing in Dürnstein adopted the castle's name. In 1299, the regional princes acquired the complex, retaining ownership until 1608. Around 1500, the castle was equipped with a water pipeline.
