Dunkelstein Castle

The castle was probably built around 1100. It was the ancestral seat of the Dunkelstein family, who were vassals of the Margraves of Styria. The first named representative appears to be an Adalbero von Dunkelstein around 1120. He possibly also appears as Adalbero vom Ennstal (1123 - 1130).
A Heinricus de Donchenstaine participated in the 2nd Crusade from 1144 to 1147, another Albero von Dunkelstein is documented with Duke Leopold in Damiette during the 5th Crusade (1219). The family probably died out at the end of the 13th century.
In 1321, the knight Piterolf (probably a Görtschacher) named himself after Dunkelstein. He was a liegeman of the Puchheimers. When the castle was sold by the Puchheimers to the Wiener Neustadt citizen Hans Mitterbacher in 1478, it was already desolate and was completely demolished in 1491.
From 1992 to 1999, the remains of Dunkelstein Castle were uncovered again through extensive excavations.
