Eberbach Castle

The origins of the three Eberbach castles are not documented by written sources, but archaeological findings suggest that the Vorderburg (Front Castle) was built in the late 12th century, the Mittelburg (Middle Castle) around 1200, and the Hinterburg (Rear Castle) in the second quarter of the 13th century. A Count Konrad von Eberbach, possibly the builder of the first castle, is mentioned in 1196. After the extinction of the Lauffen family, the complex passed to the Lords of Dürn. King Henry (VII.) acquired the castle from the Bishop of Worms in 1227. It remained in imperial possession until 1330, when it was pledged to the Palatine Counts, who used it as a bailiwick of the Electoral Palatinate.
