Egerberk Castle

The origins of Egerberk Castle date back to approximately 1241, when it was built by the Lords of Egerberg. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times. In the mid-14th century, it passed to the Lords of Schönburg, followed by Heinrich von Skopek von Dauba in 1386. It was he who extensively expanded the castle in the 1380s, which amounted to a new construction. Two large palace buildings were created, but unusually, without the otherwise common keep. The fortification was carried out by walls with tower-like, inwardly open entrance gates. After further changes of ownership, including Nikolaus von Prag and Wend von Ilburg, the latter was captured by Wilhelm von Schönburg in 1444 and died in captivity. Wilhelm von Schönburg appropriated the castle and sold it in 1448 to Jakob von Wrzessowitz, who, however, had to return the unlawful possession to Botho von Ilburg in 1457. Botho in turn ceded Egerberk to Bosso von Vitzthum in 1460. In 1557, Dietrich and Georg von Vitzthum sold the complex to Bohuslav Felix von Lobkowitz und Hassenstein. His son Bohuslaw Joachim von Lobkowitz sold the castle in 1591 to Leonard Stampach von Stampach, who allowed it to fall into disrepair in 1598 in favor of Felixburg Castle. At the end of the 19th century, around 1880, tourism in the region, including Egerberg Castle, was promoted by the Ore Mountains Committee and financial support from the Austrian imperial house.

The Egerberk castle ruin is located in Lestkov (Leskau) in the Plzeňský kraj (Pilsen) region of Jihovýchod (Southeast) Czech Republic, at an altitude of approximately 529 m above sea level.
