Ehrenburg Castle
In the Ehrbach Valley, a side valley of the Moselle, the Ehrenburg castle ruin is on a rock spur. Once the fortified center of a small imperial lordship, this spur castle is now a cultural monument.
History+
The origins of Ehrenburg date back to the early 12th century, when construction of a rectangular residential tower began. It was first mentioned in a document in 1161 as “Castrum Eremberch” in an arbitration deed by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. The castle was a contested fiefdom between the Palatinate and Trier electorates. In the 14th century, the owners of Ehrenburg joined forces with other castle lords in the Eltz Feud to oppose the territorial policies of Trier's Elector Balduin of Luxembourg.
