Ehrenfels Castle

The construction of Ehrenfels Castle is dated to the beginning of the 13th century, presumably by Otto II of Graz, a Babenberg ministerialis who named himself after the castle from 1229. The complex played a role in monitoring the "Roman Road". In 1277, the castle was owned by the brothers Heinrich, Wulfing, and Otto von Ehrenfels, sons of Otto von Trennstein. From the late 13th century, the Lords of Ehrenfels served as Bamberg ministeriales in Carinthia. The family died out in 1442 with Hans von Ehrenfels, although the castle had already passed to Konrad von Kraig in 1424. In 1449, ownership changed again to Hans von Stubenberg.
