In the Ehrenstein district of the municipality of Asbach in the Neuwied district, the Ehrenstein Castle Ruin stands as a small hillside castle in the northern Westerwald. It is located approximately 166 meters above sea level and a few meters above the Mehrbach stream. The advanced artillery tower, which rises from the forest, is particularly notable.

History+

The first documented mention of Ehrenstein Castle occurred in 1331. At that time, it was owned by a Rorich von Uetgenbach, who subsequently called himself Lord of Ehrenstein. The complex later passed to the Lords of Nesselrode, remaining in their possession until 1993. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed by Swedish troops and has not been rebuilt since.
