On a mountain spur above the Speyerbach Valley in the Palatinate Forest lies the Elmstein Castle Ruin, a former spur castle. Its strategic location in the Bad Dürkheim district of Rhineland-Palatinate once made it a stronghold for securing the valley road.

History+

The origins of Elmstein Castle likely date back to before the 13th century, when it was erected as a Palatine count's complex. Its vassals served as cupbearers. In the 13th century, between 1220 and 1230, the lower curtain wall was added. Emperor Louis the Bavarian transferred the castle to his Palatine count cousin in 1329. From 1419 to 1437, it was held as a Palatine count's fief by Count Johann V of Sponheim. Elector Friedrich I pledged the castle to Erhard von Remchingen in 1466. In 1513, ownership changed again, and Heinrich von Pagk received the castle as a fief.
