The Elsterberg Castle Ruin, located in Elsterberg on the White Elster river, is the largest preserved castle complex in the Vogtland region. It comprises the remnants of a castle.

History+

The origins of the complex date back to between 1200 and 1225, when the Lords of Lobdeburg erected a new castle. This replaced an older castle, known as the “Altes Haus,” situated about 400 meters away. With a built-up area of 1.5 hectares, the new castle was among the largest fortresses in Saxony. During the Vogtland War in 1354, the castle suffered damage but was rebuilt by 1366. It was characterized by double curtain walls and five watchtowers, serving as the center of the Elsterberg lordship.
