The Eppenstein castle ruin, a former hilltop castle, is located on a steep rock spur above the village of the same name in Styria, Austria.

The first documented mention of Eppenstein Castle occurred in 1160, when it was owned by the Traungauer family. It is believed that its origins may trace back to a wooden castle from the 10th century. The Margraves of Eppenstein, belonging to the noble Eppensteiner family, named themselves after this castle. After the Eppensteiner line died out in 1122, the castle passed to the Wildonier family. When they participated in a conspiracy against the Bohemian King Ottokar, the castle was confiscated and occupied by his followers. Following Ottokar's defeat in the Battle of Marchfeld in 1278, the Wildonier family recaptured the castle. The castle frequently changed hands, including the Carinthian Dukes and various noble families.
