Eschweiler Castle

The origins of Eschweiler Castle likely date back to the 13th or 14th century, although neither an exact construction date nor the builder are known. In its place, an official residence for the bailiff already stood in 1145. In 1429, the castle was owned by Frambach von Birgel. From 1572, it was no longer subject to feudal obligations to the Duchy of Jülich, but rather to the Mannkammer zu Aldenhoven. In the early 17th century, the complex belonged to the von Hetzingen family, before passing to the Rhenish von Hompesch family for almost 180 years starting in 1654.
