Falkenstein Castle

Falkenstein Castle was first documented in 1140. It was the ancestral seat of the noble Falkenstein family. Kalhoch von Falkenstein, the founder of Schlägl Abbey, also came from this lineage. In the 13th century, the lordship passed to the Rosenbergs, a collateral line of the Witigones, and became the scene of disputes over its ownership. Zawisch von Falkenstein, who, after an uprising against the Bohemian King Ottokar II Přemysl, assumed a leading role in Bohemia, was a prominent figure. Following his capture in 1290, Falkenstein Castle was besieged and taken by Duke Albrecht I of Habsburg in 1289. Ownership changed hands several times, including to the Walseers and Oberhaimers.
