Falkenstein Castle

The noble lords of Falkenstein built the castle. Over time, the Counts of Manderscheid took over the complex and expanded it. The main castle and its chapel date from the 12th to 14th centuries. In 1679, the castle suffered destruction but was later rebuilt. Until the end of the 18th century, Falkenstein belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg and remained in the possession of the French-Luxembourgish de la Gardelle von Falkenstein family, until the death of its last inhabitant, Anna-Maria de la Gardelle von Falkenstein. In 1815, the castle passed to Prussia. In 1886, it was sold to a private individual who expanded the residential building. To this day, the ruin with its residential building and chapel remains in private ownership and is inhabited.
