The Farnroda Castle Ruin is a moated castle from the 13th century, whose remains can now be found in the municipality of Wutha-Farnroda in the Wartburg district. The preserved tower hints at the former significance of this complex.

History+

The origins of Farnroda Castle date back to the 13th century, when it was built as a moated castle in a marshy depression of the Erbstrom valley. Even before its construction, the spur castle Wittgenstein, a small military outpost of the Thuringian landgraves, existed nearby. From the late 13th century, the Lords of Farnroda, a collateral line of the Lords of Baumbach, inhabited the castle as ministerials. Helmricus de Varnrod is the first known name bearer from 1260. The complex was originally very compact, with a tower and a few residential buildings.
