Fautsburg Castle

The construction of the Fautsburg is attributed to the Counts of Calw, who were named as owners in 1276. It is presumed that the Counts of Hohenberg built the castle in the late 12th or early 13th century. Documents from this period indicate a ministerial seat of the Knights of Vogtesberg. In 1323, their heirs, the Lords of Hornberg, sold half of the castle to Count Eberhard of Württemberg. The other half later came into the possession of the House of Württemberg via Count Palatine Rudolf IV of Tübingen. Administration was carried out by the lower nobility of the region. In 1476, Count Eberhard of Württemberg granted refuge to Dean Count Johann von Helfenstein at the castle. In 1561, the reformer Johannes Brenz received the Fautsburg as a fief, but returned it to Württemberg in 1570. In the same year, Duke Ludwig of Württemberg enfeoffed Hirsau Monastery with the property.
