The remains of the Castle can be visited

Southwest of Villach, on a rocky spur of the Graschelitzen, lies the castle ruin of Federaun. This former Bambergian fortification was strategically located directly above the historic long-distance road between Villach and Tarvis, where it once controlled the crossing of the Gail river.

History+

The first documented mention of Federaun dates back to 1311. Already in the mid-13th century, Rudolf von Ras conquered the castle and used it as a base for raids on trade caravans traveling on the route to and from Italy. Bishop Heinrich of Bamberg put an end to these activities in 1255, expelling the robber knight. The decline of Federaun Castle likely began before the 17th century.
