Federaun Castle
The castle ruin Federaun is located southwest of Villach on a western spur of the Graschelitzen with steep rock faces.
The former Bambergian fortification is situated directly above the historically important long-distance road Villach–Tarvis, which crosses the Gail below the castle rock. The fortress also includes a bridge watchtower on a rock above the river, which served to block the road and was later expanded into a residential tower. The second documented tower mentioned near Federaun could not be localized. The castle is accessible from the east via Warmbad/Graschelitzen by a partly stony and steep path.
The oldest documented mention of Federaun dates back to 1311. In the mid-13th century, Rudolf von Ras (from Rosegg in Rosental, see also Lords of Ras) conquered the castle and used it as a base for his raids on passing trade transports to and from Italy. In 1255, Bishop Heinrich of Bamberg put an end to this activity and drove out the robber knight.
The decay of Federaun Castle must have begun before the 17th century.

Only minor remains of the main castle with a mighty eastern outwork are preserved. The main castle from the late 12th century is located on the western part of the ridge. The castle complex was later repeatedly extended to the east. The result of these additions is an unusually large complex with two large outer bailey complexes. Noteworthy, however, is the beautifully bricked conical cistern in the castle courtyard. A vault of an unspecified age is also still in good condition. At the eastern end, the castle is secured by a deep neck ditch.
