Flossenbürg Castle was founded around 1100 by Count Berengar of Sulzbach. This former high medieval noble castle stands on a granite rock above the village of the same name in the Upper Palatinate.

History+

Initially, the complex consisted of a residential tower, known as the "Hoher Mantel", surrounded by a curtain wall. In the 13th century, a keep was added, while the gatehouses originated in the 16th century. The castle changed hands multiple times, including figures such as Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the Dukes of Bavaria, and the Bohemian Kings.
