Frauenburg Castle

Frauenburg, situated on a rocky spur, was first mentioned around 1248. Ulrich von Liechtenstein had received it as an inheritance from his father.

In 1268, Ulrich lost the castle to King Ottokar, but later regained it. In 1275, his son Otto succeeded him as owner. In 1312, Frauenburg came into the possession of the Judenburg line of the House of Liechtenstein. Rudolf IV von Liechtenstein initiated the expansion of the complex towards the end of the 14th century. When the family branch residing at Frauenburg died out in 1436, Johann III von Stubenberg, who was related to the Liechtensteins by marriage, inherited the lordship. It remained in the possession of his descendants until 1656. The new lords had the castle administered by stewards. In 1666, Johann Adolf Graf Schwarzenberg took over the property.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the administration of the lordship was moved to Murau. Thereafter, the decay of the complex began. In 1861, Frauenburg burned down. In 1952, initial safeguarding work began, followed later by extensive restoration measures. The ruin still belongs to the Schwarzenberg family today.
