The Frauenburg castle ruin, a medieval spur castle, rises in the Birkenfeld district of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is distinguished by its strategic position on a narrow mountain spur, flanked by two streams, offering insight into regional noble history.
History+
The construction of Frauenburg took place before 1327 under the aegis of the Counts of Sponheim. It was part of the rear county and served as a widow's residence for Countess Loretta von Sponheim from 1331, after she had handed over governance to her son Johann III. Later, the castle became the official seat of a Sponheim bailiff. In 1673, Frauenburg was destroyed by Lotharingian troops during the Wildfangfehde. It is important to note that this castle is not identical to the one built by Balduin von Luxemburg near Birkenfeld in 1328.
