Fürsteneck Castle
South of the Rench, on a ridge, lies the castle ruin of Fürsteneck. This hilltop castle near Oberkirch-Butschbach in Baden-Württemberg.
History+
The origins of Fürsteneck Castle date back to the late 12th century when it was built by the Counts of Zähringen. In 1225, the complex was first mentioned in documents as a "castrum." A change in lordship occurred in 1286 when Friedrich and Egino Fürstenberg, ministerials of King Rudolf I, took control. Later, the castle passed into the possession of the Diocese of Strasbourg. Its fate was sealed during the Thirty Years' War when it was destroyed around 1635.

Visitors today can explore the remains of the castle complex. Although the castle was destroyed around 1635, foundation walls are still preserved, showing a large oval courtyard, a residential tower, two outbuildings, a cistern shaft, and a curtain wall.
