The origins of Gamleborg Castle date back to approximately 750 AD, making it the first fortification on Bornholm. During the Viking Age (750-1050) and the early Middle Ages (1050-1150), it served as the seat of power for the kings of Bornholm. Around 1100, the fortress was expanded, but shortly thereafter it was abandoned in favor of the nearby Lilleborg Castle.

Location+

Gamleborg is situated near Aakirkeby on Bornholm, an island belonging to Denmark's Capital Region (Hovedstaden). The ruin lies at an elevation of approximately 107 meters above sea level.
