Museum

In the Uckermark region, the remains of Gerswalde Castle ruin now house a museum. Its preserved walls tell stories from the Middle Ages and of later restoration work.

The origins of Gerswalde Castle likely date back to the period between 1239 and 1250, when it was built by the Margraves of Brandenburg. Its first documentary mention is from 1256. The complex served strategically to protect the Ascanian territories of the Uckermark from the neighboring regions of Pomerania and Mecklenburg. Between 1271 and 1311, several Brandenburg Margraves used the castle as a residence. After the extinction of the Ascanians, ownership changed frequently until the von Holtzendorff family acquired the castle in 1447.
