The Gjirokastër Castle Ruin, also known as Kalaja e Gjirokastrës, overlooks the city of the same name in Albania. It surveys the city and controlled a strategically important route along the river valley.

History+

The citadel's origins date back to before the 12th century. After 1812, Ali Pasha of Tepelene carried out renovations and expanded the complex to the west. In 1932, the castle prison was enlarged under King Zog's government. The castle later also served the communist regime as a prison for political detainees.

The Gjirokastër Castle Ruin is located in the city of Gjirokastër, in the district of Gjirokastra, in the Gjirokastra region of Albania. It stands at an elevation of approximately 357 meters above sea level.
