Glanegg Castle Ruin, one of Carinthia's largest fortifications, stands in the Glan Valley in the municipality of Glanegg, Austria. Its extensive structure and the blend of Romanesque to Renaissance elements show its long history and its former significance as a control point for the Glan Valley.

History+

The first documented mention of Glanegg Castle dates back to 1121, when it was owned by Duke Heinrich III of Carinthia from the House of Eppenstein. After his death in 1122, the castle passed to his nephew, Count Bernhard of Spanheim. He, in turn, bequeathed it to his nephew, Margrave Ottokar III of Steyr. Following the death of Ottokar III's son, Duke Ottokar IV, in 1192, the castle fell to Leopold V. In the subsequent decades, Glanegg changed noble hands multiple times. Between 1473 and 1478, the castle successfully withstood attacks by the Turks.
