Gleiß Castle

The history of Gleiß dates back to 993, when Emperor Otto III granted lands in a place known as Gluzengisazi. In the early 12th century, Count Gero of Seeburg and Gleiß emerged, whose son Wichmann, later Archbishop of Magdeburg, bequeathed the lordship to the Diocese of Passau. By the end of the 14th century, Heinrich VI. von Wallsee-Enns acquired the castle. After various owners, including the Eitzinger and Oswald Schirmer, the Barons Hofmann took over in 1542. Gottfried von Scherfenberg and Daniel Strasser, a mayor from Steyr, followed. Strasser, who rebuilt Steyr after a fire, received Gleiß as a fief from Emperor Ferdinand II. His descendant Wolfgang Strasser purchased the district court in 1605. Around 1649, when Matthäus Merian depicted the castle, the Geyer von Osterburg were the owners.
