Godesburg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Godesburg castle ruin overlooks Bad Godesberg, a district of Bonn. Originally built as a refuge castle, the complex today offers a wide view over the Rhine Valley.

History+

The Godesburg, presumably built by the Franks as a refuge castle, was first mentioned in 722 as Woudensberg. A Roman altar stone was integrated into the castle walls. In 1210, the Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich I, laid the foundation stone for a new construction. Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden expanded the castle in 1244 with the first floors of the keep, which was later raised to 32 meters by Archbishop Walram von Jülich.
