The castle ruin of Gomarn, a former seat of Bamberg administrators and part of the town's fortifications, shaped the region.

History+

The origins of Gomarn Castle date back to the 12th century, when the place was still called “Gaminare.” The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1287. Around 1300, the keep with its square floor plan was built. In the 15th century, the still visible four-story wall remains were erected, and the castle was integrated into the town wall. The Diocese of Bamberg, which gained a foothold in the Lavanttal through royal estates, needed three centuries to consolidate its possessions, a process completed in 1425 with the acquisition of high judicial rights.
