The Greifenstein Castle Ruin, a former hilltop castle, stands on the Schlossberg in Thuringia.

History+

Greifenstein Castle was captured and destroyed in 1397 due to robber baron activities. After its reconstruction, the complex came into the possession of the Archbishop of Mainz. In 1461, it passed to Duke Wilhelm of Saxony and later to the Lords of Bülzingslöwen. Elector Albrecht acquired the castle in 1539 for 600 guilders. By 1661, a Mainz electoral bailiff resided there.

The Greifenstein Castle Ruin is located at approximately 435 m above sea level on the Schlossberg, west of Großtöpfer, a district of the municipality of Geismar in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia.
