Griffen Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Griffen Castle Ruin in Carinthia, Austria, is the remains of a fortress closely linked with the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg.

History+

The construction of Griffen Castle took place between 1124 and 1146 under the aegis of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg. As early as 1160, Emperor Frederick I confirmed the castle, known as Grivena, as ancient property of the Bambergers. Until 1425, the castle held blood jurisdiction. In 1292, the fortress was occupied by Ulrich von Heunburg during an uprising against Duke Albrecht I, but had to be vacated again in 1293. Bamberger rule ended in 1759, after which the castle passed into the possession of the Carinthian dominion.
