History+
The origins of Grillenburg likely date back to the early 13th century, with a first documented mention of a "Tidericus de Grellenberch" as a vassal of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg in 1217 indicating its existence. In 1286, castle occupants from the Muser and von Morungen families are documented at the castle. In 1347, Margrave Frederick the Serious of Meissen reacquired the lordship. The castle was contested during the Halberstadt Diocesan Feud and was conquered by the Counts of Mansfeld in 1362. Duke Magnus of Braunschweig owned the castle in 1366. Later, in 1485, the castle belonged to Elector Ernst of Saxony before passing to the Counts of Mansfeld. From 1486, the Lords of Morungen resided at the castle as vassals.
