Grimburg Castle

Grimburg Castle was built around 1150 by the noble lords of Saarbrücken. During the conflicts over the Trier episcopal see between 1183 and 1190, it suffered destruction. After Johann I was appointed Archbishop of Trier in 1190, it was rebuilt, making Grimburg one of the seven Trier state castles. In 1328, it became the administrative seat of the Grimburg office. Emperor Maximilian I visited the castle in 1512, allegedly for falconry. In 1522, Imperial Knight Franz von Sickingen occupied the complex without a fight. Elector Johann von Schönenberg, who resided at the castle, renovated and expanded the castle chapel in 1585.
