History+

The origins of Grubenhagen Castle date back to the 13th century, though the exact construction period and builders, whether the Counts of Dassel or the Welfs, are not definitively known. The first documented mention dates to 1263, when the Grubo von Grubenhagen family served as castlemen. By the end of the 13th century, the castle came into the possession of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It lent its name to the Principality of Grubenhagen, founded in 1291, but never served as its main residence. In 1448, the castle was besieged after Henry III of Brunswick-Grubenhagen took hostages. However, a broad coalition of princes and cities failed to capture it due to disagreement over further action. After the extinction of the Grubenhagen line of the Welfs in 1596, the castle increasingly fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, a stable was added to the keep.
