Güssing Castle

The history of Güssing Castle began in 1157 when Hungarian King Géza II granted the area to Count Wolfer of Wildon. He erected a wooden defensive structure in the same year. In 1198, the complex was first mentioned in documents as “novum castrum”. King Béla III had the wooden castle expanded into a mighty stone castle from 1242, which was part of the Hungarian castle belt along the western border. From 1270, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Güssing. This noble family, which at times sought an independent principality, played a significant role in Hungarian history. After several changes of ownership, the castle was conquered by troops of Maximilian I in 1490. In 1522, it reverted to the Hungarian crown and was handed over to Franz Batthyány and his nephew Christoph. The Batthyány family expanded the castle into an extensive fortress in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 18th century, the complex fell into disrepair until Prince Philipp Batthyány-Strattmann founded a foundation for its preservation in 1870. Extensive restoration work took place between 1982 and 2000, bringing the castle to its current state.
