Guttenberg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin of Guttenberg, a former rock castle, stands at approximately 492 meters above sea level in the Southern Wine Route region of Rhineland-Palatinate.

History+

The first confirmed mention of Guttenberg Castle dates back to 1246, when Isengard von Falkenstein handed over the complex to King Konrad IV. From 1317, the Counts of Leiningen and the Electoral Palatinate shared ownership of the castle. In the course of the Palatinate Partition of 1410, Guttenberg fell to Duke Stefan of Palatinate-Simmern-Zweibrücken. Its fate was sealed during the German Peasants' War in 1525, when the castle was destroyed by Lorraine peasant hordes and subsequently not rebuilt.
