Hammerstein Castle
In the village of Hammerstein, part of Wollbach in the Lörrach district of Baden-Württemberg, lies the Hammerstein Castle Ruin. The hilltop castle once served as a defensive structure to protect a hammer forge.
History+
Ceramic finds from an excavation in 1958 suggest that Hammerstein Castle was inhabited from the early 12th century until the end of the Middle Ages. In 1913, the complex was demolished to make way for a quarry. During the archaeological work, the foundations of a round tower with a diameter of about eight meters were uncovered.
