Hammerstein Castle
Hammerstein Castle is a lost hilltop castle at 330.7 m above sea level in the village of Hammerstein, which belongs to Kandern-Wollbach, in the Southern Black Forest in the district of Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was a fortification to protect a hammer mill. Exact data about the complex are not known; according to ceramic finds discovered during an excavation by E. Eble in 1958, the castle was inhabited from the beginning of the 12th century until the end of the Middle Ages. The castle complex was blown up in 1913 when a quarry was established there.
During the excavation, the foundations of a mighty round tower were uncovered; it had a diameter of about eight meters.
