Harchheim Castle
The castle ruin of Harchheim, also known as Ruine Burgstall, is on a rock above the Kleine-Kösslbach Gorge within a nature reserve. This site is located in the Tullern district of the municipality of St. Ägidi in the Schärding district of Upper Austria.
History+
The origins of Harchheim Castle date back to the 13th century, with a Heinrich von Harchhaim mentioned in 1260 and a Her Peter von Harchheim in 1307. The Harchhaim family continued to be referred to as a knightly lineage in various documents throughout the 15th century. In 1536, it was ordered that delinquent residents be tried and imprisoned in the castle. However, as the castle was already in a state of severe decay by the early 16th century, the court's seat was moved to St. Aegidi in 1583. A significant portion of the castle's building material was used for the reconstruction of St. Pankratius Church around 1550.
