Hardenberg Castle

Hardenberg Castle was founded by the Archbishopric of Mainz to control two important trade routes. The fortified complex was first documented around 1101 as “Vestes Haus”. As early as 1098, Archbishop Ruthard of Mainz sought refuge here from Emperor Henry IV. In the mid-13th century, the Lords of Rosdorf, as Mainz ministerials, resided at the castle. In 1287, the castle was besieged by Dukes Heinrich, Albrecht, and Wilhelm of Braunschweig and subsequently pledged for a high sum to the Counts of Hardenberg, who had previously enjoyed the favor of the Archbishops of Mainz. The Lords of Hardenberg, who had previously called themselves de Novalis, henceforth appeared as owners. The pledging of the castle and the village of Nörten was confirmed to them in 1345 and 1357 by the Archbishops of Mainz, solidifying their position.
