Hardheim Castle

The castle (Lower Castle) was built between 1260-70. In 1323, the castle was first mentioned in a document as a Wertheim fief in the possession of the Lords of Hardheim. In 1444, the castle was destroyed. In the mid-15th century, Konrad IV von Hardheim had to pledge parts of the castle for financial reasons. During raids by Horneck von Hornberg against the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg, the Lower Hardheim Castle served him, among other things, as a refuge. Thereupon, Würzburg troops stormed the castle and destroyed it. Konrad IV could not repair the damage to the lower castle and in 1447 was forced to sell the half of the lower castle not yet pledged to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. In 1595, the castle was described as an "old, dilapidated, desolate building". In 1987, the keep was exposed as part of the Hofacker renovation. In 1995, the keep was restored.
