The Hartenfels Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle, sits atop a basalt cone above the eponymous municipality.
History+
The first documented mention of Hartenfels Castle dates back to 1249, when Countess Mechthild of Sayn sold the complex to the Archbishop of Trier. Its strategic importance lay in protecting the Hohe Straße, a trade route between Frankfurt am Main and Cologne. After being destroyed in the 15th century and subsequently rebuilt, the castle was definitively demolished in 1594 by Count Wilhelm of Nassau. No further reconstruction took place thereafter.
