Harzburg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Harzburg castle ruin, a former imperial castle, stands on the northern edge of the Harz mountains, directly above Bad Harzburg in the district of Goslar. Although largely a ruin today, fragments of its foundations, towers, and well attest to its former significance.

History+

The Harzburg was strategically built between 1065 and 1068 under King Henry IV to protect the nearby imperial palace of Goslar. It was considered impregnable and equipped, including a large palas and a collegiate church. During the Saxon War in 1073, Henry IV had to flee here. After the Peace of Gerstungen in 1074, the castle was plundered and destroyed by peasants, which Henry used as a pretext for further military actions. Under Emperor Frederick I, reconstruction took place until 1180, completed by Emperor Otto IV, who died here in 1218.
