Hauenstein Castle Ruin, also known as the “Robber's Castle,” is a former hilltop castle in the Bavarian Spessart. Its remains stand on a hill between Hof Hauenstein and Mensengesäß in the Kahlgrund.

History+

Around the year 1300, Hauenstein Castle was built by the Counts of Rieneck, who served as bailiffs for the Electorate of Mainz. The complex included a “fortified house” with heated living quarters and, together with Mömbris Castle and Hüttelngesäß Castle, served to secure the Rieneck sphere of influence in the upper Kahl and Lohr valleys. In May 1450, the castle was destroyed during a campaign against robbers and thieves in the region.
