Heidelsburg Castle
The Heidelsburg castle ruin, also known as Bunenstein, is a former defensive structure in the western Palatinate Forest. Its history dates back at least to Roman times.
History+
The origins of the Heidelsburg are presumed to be no later than the 2nd century AD, based on Roman coin finds from the 1970s. Historians even consider it possible, due to the construction form and a Gallic coin find, that a Celtic predecessor existed as early as 100 BC. An expansion in the late Carolingian period is also not ruled out due to features on the chamber gate. In 1355, a rock called Bunenstein, located at the same site as the Heidelsburg, was sold by Count Arnold von Homburg to Count Walram von Zweibrücken, with the intention of building a castle there – which never happened.
