Heiligenburg Castle

Evidence of a possible Iron Age fortification exists here. In the early Middle Ages, an All Saints' Chapel stood here. The construction of the castle began between 1180 and 1186 under Archbishop Konrad I of Mainz, positioned as protection against the Thuringian and Hessian landgraves. This location led to disputes, as the fortress threatened the landgraviate. In 1232, the castle was conquered and destroyed by Konrad of Thuringia, but was rebuilt by Mainz castellans as early as 1247. Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse destroyed it again in 1273, after which it lay in ruins for a long time.
