Henschenberg Castle

The Henschenberg ruin is the ruin of a spur castle on the Henschenberg west of the town of Zell im Wiesental in the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg.

Of the extensive castle complex, a neck ditch as well as wall and building remains are still present today. The latter probably belong to an earlier residential tower, a curtain wall, and another, as yet unidentifiable building. In addition, surface debris with ceramic and tile remains from the 14th and 15th centuries can be found, indicating that the castle was still inhabited around 1400. The complex was probably built in the 12th or 13th century, although no excavations have been carried out to date that could provide more precise information.

Little is known about the history of the castle. While some researchers assume that the ruin on the Henschenberg is the ruin of the documented Altenstein Castle of the Lords of Stein, others identify the Altenstein with a lost castle near the hamlet of Altenstein (see Altenstein Castle) and thus in the municipality of Häg-Ehrsberg.
