Hertenberg Castle

The castle was originally constructed by the Counts of Habsburg. As early as 1268, it was destroyed during clashes between Rudolf von Habsburg and Bishop Heinrich von Neuenburg; other sources mention the year 1272. Around 1300, the castle passed to Konrad Ludwig, a Basel ministerialis, who subsequently called himself 'von Hertenberg'. An earthquake in 1356 sealed the castle's fate and led to its abandonment. Excavations in 1999 uncovered parts of Roman soldier belts as well as pottery shards from the Migration Period, suggesting an earlier settlement of Hertenberg by early Alemannic communities. In 1992, private initiatives began securing the remaining walls, which later led to the establishment of a support association.
