The Herwartstein castle ruin, an example of medieval defensive architecture in Baden-Württemberg, lies on a rock above the Brenz valley south of Königsbronn. Although only remnants are visible today, the site is closely linked to noble families and royal decisions.

History+

The origins of Herwartstein Castle date back to the early Middle Ages, with an initial complex presumably already in Hohenstaufen possession. The name Herwartstein was first documented in 1240, when the castle was listed as a fief of the Schenken von Herwartstein. It later came into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein.
