Hieburg Castle

The origins of Hieburg, initially named Mairhofen, date back to the late 13th century. In 1290, the castle was first documented when Walter von Neukirchen was mentioned as its owner. Friedrich von Velben, who owned the castle until 1297, had it expanded into a fortress, featuring a high curtain wall, wooden structures, and two tower chambers. In 1544, a lightning strike caused damage to the complex, which was subsequently repaired. Following further fires and several changes of ownership, the castle was declared dilapidated by Christoph von Küenberg in 1620. Another fire in 1661 led to Hieburg being left to complete decay.
