The Hiltenburg castle ruin, a high medieval castle complex, is located near Bad Ditzenbach on the Swabian Jura.

History+

The Hiltenburg was first documented in 1289 as the official seat of the Counts of Helfenstein. From 1356, it served the elder line of the Helfensteins as a secondary residence before becoming their main domicile in 1396. Between 1446 and 1482, the castle was pledged to Württemberg. The Hiltenburg met its end on November 9, 1516, when Duke Ulrich of Württemberg ordered its destruction, and a reconstruction was forgone for financial reasons.
